Our Approach

How Our Services Work

Psychiatric Evaluation

Our 50-minute initial session is dedicated to understanding your medical history, symptoms, and the course of your condition. We take the time to understand your goals and will determine if psychiatric medication could be beneficial for you.

Treatment Planning

We will develop a mental health treatment plan for you which may include medication or referral to another professional such as a talk therapist. If medication is prescribed you will be educated about benefits and risks, as well as given a timeline for symptom improvement and length of treatment.

Ongoing Support

We provide ongoing support to make sure the treatment plan is working and that you are making progress toward a happier, healthier life. Recommended follow-up frequency varies based on the severity of symptoms, but many clients check in only every few months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! We are in-network with the following plans: PacificSource, Moda, Providence, Blue Cross Blue Shield, HMA, ComPsych, Aetna, First Choice, and Samaritan.

We do not offer appointments exclusively for psychotherapy but do incorporate elements of common psychotherapy modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing into our practice. If you utilize insurance, you may see this reflected as a therapy billing code on your appointment explanation of benefits. We do not intend to fully supplant the services of a dedicated psychotherapist.

We provide mental health care for patients 13-65 years old, or 8+ with referral from a known colleague.

Conditions we treat:

  • “Dual-Diagnosis” (co-occurring Substance Use Disorder/Mental Health Disorder)
  • Depression
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Bipolar Spectrum
  • Disorders
  • ADHD
  • Trauma-Related Disorders
  • Schizophrenia/Psychosis
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Personality Disorders
  • Substance Use Disorders
  • Insomnia/Sleep Disorders
  • And many more

No. Autism is better diagnosed via a testing psychologist. If you are seeking an autism evaluation, we recommend searching for “psychological testing and evaluation” on PsychologyToday.com.

Insurance payment structures vary by plan. We accept most major insurance plans and make every effort to minimize out-of-pocket costs to clients.

The private pay fee schedule is as follows:

  • Initial evaluation (60 min): $400
  • Follow-up visits (20-30 min): $250
  • Cancellations (with less than 24 hours notice): considered no-show, $200 fee
  • Cancellations (with more than 24 hours notice): no fee
  • No shows: $200 fee
  • QbCheck ADHD testing: $150 (if not covered by insurance)

Get a pen and paper ready, then call the number listed for member services on the back of your insurance card (some plans have a dedicated mental health line as well.) Ask the following questions:

  • “Is John Benson, of Benson Behavioral Health, considered an in-network provider?”
  • If needed, our office addresses can be found at the bottom of this page (use the Salem OR address.)
  • If we are not in-network, be sure to ask about out-of-network benefits as they often reimburse a large portion of your private-pay fees.
  • “What is the co-payment amount or co-insurance percentage for outpatient mental health visits?”
  • Co-payment fees are the same each session.
  • Co-Insurance-based plans are more complex. They generally feature an annual deductible: an amount of healthcare cost you are required to meet before insurance provides any coverage. After that, insurance will ask you to pay only a percentage of the session cost.
  • Lastly, be sure to ask: “Are there any limits on the number of covered mental health visits per year?”

Yes. However, please note that we do require the signed consent of a parent or guardian and a standing release from the client to speak to the parent or guardian in the event of an emergency.
